Learning Aragonese Across Generations

As part of the collaboration activities within LocalLing, Caroline Calvet from Paul-Valéry University Montpellier is currently undertaking a research stay at the University of Zaragoza, hosted by LocalLing’s Spanish colleagues at the Campus of Huesca.

During her visit, Caroline has been engaging with several Aragonese language teaching contexts for adult learners, contributing to ongoing fieldwork focused on minority language learning and revitalisation. The stay also includes exchanges within the “Universidad de la Experiencia”, a learning programme for retired people at the University of Zaragoza where Aragonese is taught.

One of the highlights of the visit was a public colloquium held in Sabiñánigo, where Caroline Calvet and Iris Orosia Campos Bandrés discussed the role of adult learning in the preservation of Pyrenean linguistic heritage, with particular attention to Aragonese and Occitan. Drawing on their recent research, they explored the profiles and motivations of adult learners engaging with these languages.

The secondment offers valuable opportunities for collaboration and comparative perspectives on adult education, sociolinguistics, and community-based language revitalisation.
